Applications are now open for research internships at the University of Liège (ULiège) in Belgium, offered through the UNIC European University Alliance. These internships are available for students in engineering, computer science, data science, and related fields.
The internships focus on real-world environmental and engineering research — particularly around flood risk, nature-based solutions, and water quality. There is no application fee. The internships are not fully funded — no scholarship or stipend is mentioned, so these are research-based placements. Students from all nationalities are welcome to apply as long as they meet the academic background requirements.
There is no fixed deadline — positions are open and flexible, starting anytime from September 2025 until September 2027. You can apply at any time that suits your academic schedule.

Available Research Topics:
Topic 1: Assessing Flood Damage in the Business Sector
This research looks at how floods affect businesses — including damage to buildings, equipment, stock, and lost working time. The intern will work with survey data from Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands to build better flood loss models for the business sector.
Topic 2: Modelling Nature-based Solutions for Flood Risk
This topic focuses on using green, nature-friendly approaches to reduce flood risk. The intern will use numerical models and the Vesdre catchment as a case study to design and evaluate nature-based flood protection measures.
Topic 3: Modelling Pollutant Transport During Floods
This internship looks at how pollutants spread through rivers and surrounding land during flood events. The intern will develop tools to model and understand this process, helping improve water quality management.
Topic 4: Flood Storage as a Nature-based Solution
This topic focuses on temporary flood storage systems — how they are designed, where they should be placed, and how effective they are. The intern will benchmark existing approaches across Europe and develop new spatial analysis tools.
How to Apply:
Applying is simple and straightforward. There is no online portal — you apply directly by email.
- Prepare your CV (up to date)
